Special:
Black Friday: Bluehost, Hostmonster & Justhost Sales
There is an opportunity to pick up an incredible value hosting account here. If you have read our Justhost Review you may already know that all of these companies are identical, both in terms of the plans offered, the server location, and the support team that runs it all.
Historically, Justhost (prior to being purchased by EIG) had a terrible reputation and as such they as a brand are marketed much more cheaply than Bluehost or Hostmonster, despite being the same product. Therefore, if you like the sound of Bluehost, or Hostmonster then by default you should love Justhost, especially when you see how much cheaper they are.
We are not sure about the exact Black Friday sales these companies have, as they are still showing their Thanksgiving sale. We suspect it will remain the same.
With the sale you can pick up hosting as low as $3.95 per month for Bluehost or Hostmonster. We recommend, however, to sign up with Justhost and get hosting for as low as $2.25 per month! You may have to sign up for a longer period to get this offer, but they do have an Anytime Money-Back Guarantee so you can always get a prorated refund if you no longer need the hosting for whatever reason.
We’ll will double check and update this page once all the Black Friday offer promotional material goes live.

Five Best Domain Name Registrars

A domain name is the magic that turns a raw IP address like 69.60.7.199 into a human-friendly chunk of text like supportcoupon.com. Here's a look at five of the most popular domain name registrars that help you register and manage your domains.

1.       Namecheap (1 Year Registration: $9.98)

Domain registration at Namecheap is economical, as their name implies, but Namecheap hasn't built a name for itself just by offering the absolute cheapest deals in town. Namecheap's reputation rests on fantastic customer service and value-added packages. You get solid customer service, free email and URL forwarding, free and customizable domain parking, free domain transfers, dynamic DNS services if you want to redirect a domain to your home server, and more.

2.       1&1 (1 Year Registration: $4.99)

All 1&1 domain registrations include a simple five-page starter website (consider it a "super" domain parking package), an email account with 2GB of storage, and free private domain registration to shield your personal information. 1&1 also offers free domain transfer.

3.       Go Daddy (1 Year Registration: $11.99)

Go Daddy has built a customer base by offering cheap package deals (combining domain registration and web hosting) as well as frequent specials on domain registration. Go Daddy registrations include what amounts to a free mini-hosting plan. You get a five-page web site based on one of their templates, a photo album, blogging tools, and an email account with 1GB of storage. Although Go Daddy doesn't offer free private registration, if you register five or more domains, it's free for all of them.

4.       Name (1 Year Registration: $9.99)

Name.com goes beyond simple domain name searches and offers alternative suggestions including domain names that are currently held but up for auction. While the majority of us are looking to register domains cheaply and quickly, it's good to know that the domain other services would simply flag as "Unavailable" is actually up for auction. Name.com also has a service called Domain Grabber. If you really want a domain but it's unavailable, you can pay Name.com (typically between $20-50) to pounce on the domain should it become available.
5.       Gandi (1 Year Registration: $16.85)

Gandi's mission as a registrar and host is to offer clean, simple, no bullshit service. Every registration includes two free SiteMaker pages, one free DotClear2 blog, private domain registration, a free 1-year SSL certificate, and a personal email. If you manage a large number of domains, Gandi also offers a user-friendly dashboard with tag-based organization and search.
Now that you've had a chance to look over the five most popular domain registrars among Lifehacker readers, it's time to cast a vote for your favorite:

Why you should go with 1and1 web hosting?

1&1 is one of the largest and the most well-known companies in web hosting industry. The company is now owned by the German internet services company United Internet which owns other brands such as FastHosts and Sedo.com.
1&1 was first established in 1988 and can claim to be one of the largest hosting organisations in the world with more than 10.5 million customers and handling 11 million domain names. The company has 10 separate arms located in Europe and North America, each with its own website and hosting plans. The company is truly massive, so for the purposes of this review, I will focus on the UK arm, which was opened in 2000.
UK customers may already be familiar with 1&1 through its TV advertising. The company is focused on domain name registration and shared hosting services, although there are wide ranges of other services on offer.
Here are some good points that make me so happy to go with 1and1 web hosting:
1.       So affordable price
There are three shared hosting packages to be chosen from, including Basic, Unlimited and Performance. All of them have different features and accordingly they are priced at $5.99/mo, $8.99/mo and $14.99/mo regularly. Now the packages are promoted with a discount price starting at $0.99/mo, $5.99/mo and $10.99/mo respectively.
Like many web hosting providers, 1and1 also reaches out discount price at $0.99 only for the first year. So, don’t angry with them if you are so shock with the renewal price.
Anyway, no one has a price as cheap as 1and1 now.
2.       So nice support team
There are a range of support facilities offered by 1&1. Before going into these, it’s worth noting that each arm of the organisation has its own technical support contacts; in America there is a US-based email address and phone line, where in the UK there is a UK number and email address.
Technical support is available 24/7 and the phone line is a freephone number.
Customers also have the option to allow the technical support to view and guide them through a solution using the Netviewer application. The company also maintains a comprehensive list of FAQs for self help purposes.
1&1 has active Twitter and Facebook accounts (again, these are country specific: there are different accounts for German, US and other areas, so make sure you follow the right one for your location). Looking at the accounts, 1&1 do seem interact with their customers through these channels and will readily respond to support queries on social media.
There is also a YouTube channel where 1&1 videos are posted from time to time.
3.       Good security
Another aspect of this web hosting service worthy of mention is its security. 1&1 offers SSL certificates, which are essential for eCommerce websites. The web host also employs dual hosting, which means that your site is stored on two separate servers in different geographic locations (the service uses data centers in both the U.S. and Europe). This redundancy is important because in the event that one of the 1&1 data centers is compromised, your website will be supported on a server at a different location and won't experience any downtime.
4.       Relative Performance
The one true job a website hosting server is to deliver your website files as quickly and as reliably as possible everytime someone asks for them (by typing in your domain name).
Neither I nor my clients have ever had significant downtime with 1&1. They claim to have independently verified 99.9% uptime. That’s industry standard, so without monitoring tools, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt.
The one thing I can measure is how quickly 1&1 delivers my files to a browser. There are a lot of variables that go into how fast a website loads, but one of the most important variables is how fast the server responds after the initial request – otherwise known as Time To First Byte (TTFB). Here are results of speed tests that I ran in early January 2014.

Those tests are not amazing, but they are better than some other major web hosting brands (ie, GoDaddy). So on performance, like pricing and options, 1&1’s main pro is that they are really just fine on the basics. The one last positive of 1&1’s performance is that they do provide plenty of memory to run your website. Below is a snapshot of the memory provided to WordPress.

Just for reference – WordPress recommends having 64M of memory to run. Often cheaper web hosts are notorious for skimping on memory provided, since customers rarely actually check that setting. 1&1 does come through on that.
1&1 Summary
1&1 is a part of a huge hosting organisation - and you can really tell. Its website is sprawling, and there are a range of options for customers in various countries.

The services it offers are comparable to many other hosting providers, but the sheer number of positive articles in the technical press suggest that this is a company that’s well-respected. This alone is enough to boost confidence.

Pros and cons of Godaddy web hosting

Go Daddy’s primary focus is domain names and domain auctions. Web hosting is offered alongside domain registrations, but the entire front page of the website (apart from the images of Go Daddy Girls) is dedicated to the registration of domains - hardly surprising, really, since they manage 53 million of them. Although domain registration is an important part of their business, we’re primarily going to look at their web hosting services.
On their website, Go Daddy claims that it’s the “largest hosting provider of secure websites” with more than 10 million customers hosting 5 million websites between them. Founded in 1997 under a different name, it’s one of three companies under the same umbrella (Blue Razor Domains and Wild West Domains are the other two). The company currently has used facilities in five US states and in India, and the headquarters are in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Go Daddy are known in the US for their outrageous Superbowl ads; the videos are archived on their site in a special ‘commercials’ showreel (or on YouTube in ‘uncut’ form). Why choose GoDaddy for web hosting?
We’ve listed somethings about it here for you to decide whether or not GoDaddy hosting is the right choice for you.
Convenience

GoDaddy is a great choice for registering domain names. Most webmasters already have a domain name registered with GoDaddy, so it only makes sense to purchase a web hosting account with them as well. GoDaddy makes it very easy for webmasters to link their domain name and web hosting account together. After all, combining your domain name and web hosting account into a single place is quite convenient. Yes, you can register your domain name with other web hosts, but they usually aren’t the best choice for domains.

Ease of Use

When you sign up for hosting – you don’t get a website, you get a place to “put your website” – as it were. So you get a dashboard to operate your hosting account – add domains, install files, manage databases, install WordPress, etc.
Since it is the backend of a server – it’s not going to be super-user friendly, but it’s also nice to be able to install and manage your account without having to learn programming.
Performance
The GoDaddy Web Hosting Performance team is the group within GoDaddy that is responsible for tuning our web hosting environment for peak performance. In order to do so, we measure the response time of a control page loaded on every one of our web servers, every 5 minutes. An Application Index (APDEX) score is calculated for every server, which rolls up to product location, to product to product group. The Hosting Operations Center team has a prioritized list of servers to investigate if a performance issue arises. The company has great situational awareness of the performance levels of its products and services.
Price & Features
Their economy plan is $6.99/month with 12 month lock-in – but they always give away coupons for longer lock-ins and you can push it down to even $3.49/mo.
Even though GoDaddy’s specialty is not hosting (they started as a domain registrar) – they are using their capital and market presence to really push down on prices.
If you go with them, you won’t have to worry if you are paying too much. (check out their prices here)
Conclusion
While GoDaddy has some negative factors, it’s still one of the largest internet companies and continues to make large profits. On a technical review, their web hosting is fairly decent. It’s not the best one out there, but does hold its own when compared to Bluehost, HostGator, and iPage.

What happen after I purchase Godaddy web hosting?

Once you purchase a Web hosting plan, GoDaddy stores your site on one of our servers and assigns it a unique DNS. The DNS serves as the address that allows people around the world to find and view your website. This unique address is required in order for people to view your site.
By purchasing a website hosting package, you're basically buying space on one of our servers. It’s similar to the space on a computer’s hard drive, but the server allows your website’s files to be accessed from anywhere.

What can I use to build my website?

You can build your website in several different ways – from hand-coding with HTML to using a website builder program.
If you require a lot of functionality and versatility from your website, you’ll benefit from programs and applications that can help you build your site. Our Web hosting plans give you access to free, server-side applications that can be used to develop and customize your website, including popular Content Management System (CMS) applications like WordPress® and Joomla!®.
They try to make building your website as simple as possible. If you prefer to use popular Web design software such as Adobe Dreamweaver®, Microsoft Expression®, and Apple iWeb, you can easily upload your files to your GoDaddy hosting account.

If I already have a website, can I transfer it to your Web hosting?

Moving your website to GoDaddy is a simple process. If you have access to your existing website files, you can upload them through our Hosting Control Center or via an FTP client. If you don’t have a current copy of your website, you should be able to request one from your current website hosting provider.
If you have any questions along the way, our 24/7 support team is here to assist you. They can help you determine the best method for transitioning your website to a GoDaddy account.

I just bought a hosting plan. Now what?

The first step is to activate your account. Just go to GoDaddy.com and click on My Account. You’ll be asked to enter your customer number or username and your password.
Once you’re logged in, you’ll see a list of products. Select the gray box next to Web hosting then pick the account you want to activate. Next, click the Launch button for that account.
You just have a few more steps to go.
Click on the Enter domain box then type in the domain name or choose the name from the list.
Enter your own FTP username or select the one they suggest. Create and confirm your password, click Finish and you’re done!

After you’ve completed these steps, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 24 hours for your new account to be fully active. Once everything is up and running, they’ll send you an email with all of the account details.
